The Material
This specimen retains several layers of a natural amethyst geode. Dark grey banded agate defines portions of the perimeter, while pale lavender quartz and chalcedony form the semi-translucent carved body. Across the rear, an open cavity contains dense violet amethyst crystal points. These materials are all silica-based, but differences in crystal structure, scale, color, and translucency create clear transitions from the polished exterior to the irregular reflective chamber within.
The Sculpture
The solid outer material is carved into a human skull with recessed eye sockets, a defined nasal opening, shaped cheekbones, and individually divided teeth. Dark banding follows portions of the skull’s outer contour, while the lighter facial and cranial areas admit a limited amount of ambient light. The natural geode cavity remains exposed across the reverse rather than being enclosed by carving. When viewed under changing illumination, the translucent forehead and polished exterior direct attention toward the deeper purple crystal interior.
Form & Meaning
The title “Celestial Cavern” refers to the contrast between the skull’s controlled exterior and the irregular crystal chamber revealed behind it. Cavities in sculpture often suggest an interior that is concealed until the object is viewed from the correct angle. Here, that relationship is geological rather than invented: the agate bands, translucent quartz, and amethyst points formed as successive parts of the same specimen. The composition can therefore be read as an image of hidden complexity held within a restrained outer form.
