The Material
This specimen retains the layered structure of a natural agate geode. Its outer body consists principally of dense microcrystalline quartz, commonly described as chalcedony, with a smooth surface capable of accepting a high polish. The central cavity is lined with fine druzy quartz crystals. Differences in crystal size, orientation, and spacing create a reflective interior that contrasts with the more continuous surface of the surrounding agate.
The Sculpture
Multiple serpents coil along the border of the geode opening, following the natural curve of the cavity rather than covering it. Their bodies are distinguished by repeated scale lines, rounded contours, raised heads, and tapering tails. Matte detailing separates the serpents from the polished agate beneath them. Cloud-scroll reliefs extend across the upper crest, adding a second pattern around the mineral opening. The druzy chamber remains exposed as the central element of the composition.
Form & Meaning
The title “Keepers of the Chamber” describes the serpents’ physical position around the open geode cavity. Their coiled bodies form a border between the polished exterior and the crystal-lined interior, giving the appearance of figures attending an enclosed space. Serpents have acquired varied meanings across cultures, including vigilance, continuity, and renewal through the shedding of their skin. Here, those associations remain secondary to the visible structure: an irregular natural chamber framed by deliberately ordered carving.
