MATERIAL OVERVIEW

The Material

Brecciated Red Jasper is a commercial name for a silica-rich carving material distinguished by red tones and angular fragments joined by contrasting veins and cement. Brick-red to deep red areas meet pale pink, orange, cream and gray pieces, creating a mosaic-like pattern. The name describes its appearance and brecciated structure rather than a separate mineral species.

A bright polish reveals the contrast between fragments as the pattern passes across a skull’s crown, eye sockets and jaw. Each cut produces a different arrangement, making pattern placement part of the sculpture’s character. Natural fractures, cavities and fragment boundaries require individual inspection, while thin carved details should be protected from impact.
