MATERIAL OVERVIEW

The Material

Nine Dragon Jade, also sold as Nine Dragon Jasper, is the ornamental stone known as Hua’an Jade or Jiulongbi. It is a fine-grained calc-silicate metamorphic rock, commonly rich in diopside, with blue-green, dark blue and green areas crossed by brown-black, pink, gold or beige bands and veins.

Its compact texture can support crisp contours and a smooth polish. Straight, folded or web-like bands become prominent across curved sculptural surfaces, giving each carving a distinct arrangement of colour and pattern. Mineral boundaries and natural veins can influence how individual areas are carved and polished.
