Before the First Breath
A great dragon folds its strength around an egg. Beside it, a small dragon pushes into the world from a rugged stone shell. Seen together, ‘The Frost Guardian’ and ‘Dawn of Life’ feel like two moments held within the same breath: the long watch before a birth, and the first stirring of the life it protects.
We love how the tenderness of one gives the other a deeper meaning. The hatchling's arrival answers the guardian's devotion; the guardian gives that fragile beginning a world in which it can be safe.
‘The Frost Guardian’ · Specimen No. 17
The broad wings rise around a single unhatched egg, while the dragon lowers its head toward the life in its care. Its formidable shape becomes an enclosure. This is the quiet strength at the heart of the pair: power gathered into the act of protection.
‘Dawn of Life’ · Specimen No. 18
Within the rough shell, a young dragon lifts its pale wings and reaches beyond the opening. The enclosing stone makes that first movement feel small and extraordinary. Beside the guardian, the hatchling carries the story forward, from the promise of life to its arrival.
The Vision Behind‘The Birthright’
We imagine them sharing a quiet moment: a great dragon cradles an unbroken egg, while a hatchling beside it lifts its head from a second, newly opened shell. The adult's wings gather around the small scene, and the young dragon looks up into that shelter. This is the feeling we wanted the pair to hold—new life finding its first place in a world already waiting to protect it.
The Making of This Piece
Two Forms for One Idea
The same designer conceived both sculptures as one artistic work. Each gives the shared story a different form: the guardian's wings create an open shelter around its egg, while the hatchling appears within the retained host-rock matrix that becomes its shell.
One composition extends outward through wings and limbs; the other draws us inward toward a small creature emerging from a mineral enclosure. Together, their contrasting silhouettes let protection and birth speak to each other.
The Original Award-Recognized Pair
The two sculptures were presented together as a single entry at a jade-carving competition in China and received recognition as that paired work. That shared history belongs to their original composition.
Today they retain their individual identities as Specimens No. 17 and No. 18. The Birthright offers the original pair together, with the option to select either sculpture individually.
The Stone
Blue Chalcedony
Soft blue color and gentle translucency connect the two works. In ‘The Frost Guardian’, light passes through the thinner wings while the thicker body holds a cloudier blue. The extended form lets that changing light become part of the shelter around the egg.
A Shell Left in the Stone
In ‘Dawn of Life’, the pale blue dragon remains close to its rough brown host-rock enclosure. The contrast gives the shell its presence and the emerging creature its delicacy. We are drawn to the way the same material carries two different feelings: an airy sweep of wings in the guardian, and a protected inner world around the hatchling.
