Hand-carved from natural Yooperlite, this human skull features a grey speckled surface that reveals orange-yellow fluorescence under suitable ultraviolet light. Yooperlite is a sodalite-bearing syenite known for bright orange-yellow fluorescence when viewed under suitable ultraviolet light. The polished stone carries these natural variations across the crown, facial structure, and defined jaw.

Material & Craft
The Material
Yooperlite is a trade name for sodalite-bearing syenite rather than a formal mineral species. It appears grey to dark grey in normal light, while sodalite-rich areas may fluoresce orange to orange-yellow under suitable ultraviolet illumination; brightness varies with composition, wavelength, and viewing conditions.
The Sculpture
Each skull is carved from a selected block of natural stone and progressively shaped to define the brow ridge, orbital cavities, nasal opening, cheekbones, teeth, and jawline. Successive stages of grinding and polishing refine the surface while preserving the clarity of the anatomical structure.
Because the carving process responds to the characteristics of the individual material, minor variations in proportion and surface detail may occur.
Form & Meaning
The human skull is one of the most enduring forms in art. Stripped of expression and identity, it reduces the human figure to its underlying structure.
Across different artistic traditions, the skull has been used to reflect on mortality, time, equality, and the material nature of human life. In contemporary stone carving, it creates a direct contrast between a universally recognizable anatomical form and the individual character of natural stone.
Natural Variation Statement & Care
As each piece is individually carved from natural stone, dimensions and weight may vary slightly, while color may appear different under varying lighting.
Care: Dust with a soft cloth or clean briefly with a damp cloth and mild soap before drying. Avoid impacts, soaking, strong chemicals, thermal shock, steam, and ultrasonic cleaning.
