The Material
This specimen combines solid amethyst-bearing material with an exposed cluster of natural quartz crystal points. The carved areas display a smooth, reflective finish, while the cluster retains its irregular growth structure and varied violet color. Differences in crystal size, orientation, and color concentration create shifting highlights across the crown. These raw surfaces contrast with the continuous polish of the skull and wing.
The Sculpture
The composition is deliberately asymmetrical. One side carries an elongated wing that rises beyond the cranium, with overlapping feathers defined by central lines and repeated grooves. On the opposite side, the feather pattern remains close to the skull rather than extending into a matching wing. Deep eye sockets, defined cheekbones, and individually separated teeth establish the facial structure beneath the crystal cluster. A fitted metal stand supports the narrow sculpture in its intended upright position.
Form & Meaning
In Old Norse tradition, valkyries are female figures associated with battle and the selection of warriors who die in combat. The title “Valkyrie’s Crest” draws on their later artistic association with elevated, armored figures, while the wing is a contemporary sculptural interpretation rather than a literal historical reconstruction. Its uneven extension gives the piece a sense of upward motion, while the skull and crystal crown hold the composition between mortality, distinction, and remembrance.
