The Material
Dream Amethyst, also known as Chevron Amethyst, is a banded variety of quartz composed of alternating zones of purple amethyst and white or milky quartz. These zones commonly form V-shaped, zigzag, or layered patterns within the stone. Their direction and spacing vary naturally, so the carving process exposes a different arrangement of violet color, pale quartz, and transitional banding in every piece.
The Sculpture
The skull is carved into a rounded pumpkin-like form, combining the compact silhouette of a traditional pumpkin with the anatomical structure of a human skull. Defined orbital cavities, a shaped nasal opening, pronounced cheekbones, and individually separated teeth remain clearly articulated across the front.
Subtle vertical divisions follow the rounded cranial form, echoing the natural ribbing of a pumpkin while giving the sculpture a distinct sense of volume and rhythm. The polished surfaces soften the transitions between these elements, allowing the overall form to remain cohesive rather than ornamental.
Form & Meaning
The pumpkin and the human skull are both familiar forms associated with transformation, impermanence, and the passage of time. Bringing them together creates a sculptural contrast between the organic fullness of the pumpkin and the exposed structure of the human cranium.
The result is not a literal representation of either form, but a reinterpretation of the skull through the visual language of the pumpkin. Its rounded volume and segmented surface introduce a more playful, seasonal character while retaining the skull’s long-standing place in art as a reflection on mortality and the temporary nature of life.
