A Chamber Worth Keeping
We have a weakness for a skull that seems to contain another world. Celestial Cavern gives that feeling a real interior: a deep opening crowded with violet crystals, held within a pale face and a dark, flowing boundary. The familiar expression of the skull is still there, but it shares its presence with something wonderfully unruly.
The name belongs to that invitation. Small crystal faces catch light at different depths, suggesting a private constellation inside the stone. We enjoy the thought of keeping such a cavern close—not as a landscape reduced to decoration, but as a mineral world with its own strange, human threshold.
An Open Secret
We love how this piece reveals one world while keeping another hidden. The carved face draws us in with its familiar eyes, cheekbones, and jaw, but the crystal chamber invites us to look deeper, where sculpted contours give way to clustered points and shadow. Both have their own beauty, and together they make the work feel complete.
The darker side has a character of its own. Broad bands and earthy tones give the skull a sense of weight, while lighter passages bring contrast and depth. What fascinates us is the result: part familiar face, part ancient relic, with a hidden crystal world that keeps drawing us back.
The Making of This Piece
Giving the Cavern a Face
We wanted the skull’s anatomy to feel complete without taking anything away from the natural crystal chamber. The brow, cheek, and jaw give the sculpture its familiar human form, while the open side leaves the cavern free to reveal its extraordinary interior. The challenge was finding the right balance: enough carving to bring the skull to life, and enough untouched crystal to preserve what made the stone special.
The stronger contours frame the opening without forcing it into a regular shape. The pale stone meets the crystal points along their natural, uneven boundary, while the lower jaw brings the whole sculpture into a unified profile. We love how the finished piece holds both together: the intention of the sculptor and the wonderful complexity of the stone itself.
Carving Across the Bands
The dark banded regions take on broad curves around the face and jaw. Lighter lines move through those contours, so the stone’s pattern becomes part of the anatomy rather than a separate decoration. Areas of earthy colour add another interruption within the dark ground.
Polishing gives those carved surfaces long, continuous reflections. Beside them, the crystal bed remains angular and broken into many small faces. The photographs gathered here show how the composition holds together through the front, sides and crown: the skull remains readable without asking every part of the material to behave alike.
The Stone
Layers of Violet and Agate
Violet amethyst, pale translucent stone, and dark agate bands give Celestial Cavern its remarkable depth. Inside the cavity, crystals of different sizes catch the light along their edges, while deeper recesses remain in shadow. A pale, layered boundary separates this glittering interior from the smooth, polished skull.
We are fascinated by how differently this stone responds to light. Under ordinary illumination, its darker bands feel rich and solid. But when light passes through from behind or beneath, hidden layers of color and translucency begin to emerge. It is another reminder of why we love working with natural stone: even after the carving is finished, there is still more to discover.
