The Material
This specimen contains pale blue chalcedony within its original dark host-rock matrix. Chalcedony is a compact, microcrystalline variety of quartz, valued as an ornamental material for its smooth polish and varying degrees of translucency. Here, the polished blue interior remains physically connected to the coarse natural exterior. Differences in color, texture, and light transmission clearly separate the chalcedony from the surrounding matrix while preserving their geological relationship within a single specimen.
The Sculpture
An opening through the front of the matrix reveals a newly hatched dragon carved from the blue chalcedony inside. Its head, folded body, small claws, and thin wings emerge from the cavity without being visually separated from the surrounding shell. Cracked edges around the opening establish the form of an egg, while the dragon’s polished surfaces catch more light than the rough exterior. A fitted metal stand supports the irregular base and presents the opening in an upright position.
Form & Meaning
Hatching is a direct image of emergence: a living form breaking beyond the structure that contained its development. The dragon adds an imagined creature at its smallest and most vulnerable stage, replacing the usual image of power with one of potential. Its position between the rough matrix and the open exterior gives the sculpture its central tension—the moment when concealment becomes appearance and a closed geological form becomes an inhabited one.
