The Material
Blue chalcedony is a compact, microcrystalline variety of quartz known for its pale color, smooth polish, and varying degrees of translucency. This specimen retains its rough outer matrix across the reverse and perimeter. The exposed interior presents blue-grey chalcedony alongside lighter, milky bands, producing natural tonal separation across the carved face. The contrast between the polished interior and coarse exterior preserves the relationship between the chalcedony and its original host rock.
The Sculpture
The eagle is carved in bas-relief across the broad interior face of the nodule. Its extended wings follow the width of the available surface, with overlapping feather groups, a defined head, and a curved beak created through shallow differences in depth. Flowing contours beneath and around the bird form a field of curling waves. The carving remains closely connected to the stone’s flat inner layer, without deep undercutting or fully projecting elements. A custom wooden base supports the irregular specimen in an upright display position.
Form & Meaning
The eagle has appeared in civic emblems, heraldry, and artistic traditions as an image of height, authority, vigilance, and freedom. In this composition, its upward posture is set against a field of curling waves, creating a visual movement from turbulence toward open space. The title “Soar Above” refers to that compositional direction: the bird rises through the surrounding forms rather than remaining enclosed by them.
