The Skull as a Grotto
The Lunar Grotto imagines a small lunar chamber wearing a human face. Dark blue-grey stone gathers around a pale crystalline opening, like a cave whose entrance has learned to watch. It is an image we find easy to live with: strange, quiet, and full of interior space.
Room for the Unknown
The skull does not explain what belongs in that chamber. We prefer to leave that thought open. A little mineral cave can become a refuge, a hidden room, or simply a place for the eye to rest. The work holds the invitation without filling it for us.
The broad pale rim makes the opening seem larger than a small decorative hollow. Beside the dark face, it has the concentrated brightness of a chamber that catches more light than the surrounding stone.
The Making of This Piece
Carving the Surround
The recognizable face occupies the solid agate around the natural opening. The cavity keeps its own uneven edge and crystalline depth. Giving both enough room makes the skull and grotto feel inseparable, rather than a finished carving with a crystal ornament added to it.
The Shape of an Entrance
Broad polished regions provide the calm outline around a much busier interior. The simplicity of the anatomy lets the opening remain the defining event. Its proportions make the imagined chamber feel generous and the face quietly monumental.
The cavity opens through the side of the cranium while the brow and jaw keep their familiar outline. The smoother dark region gives the rough inner edge a calm boundary, so the two forms remain part of the same object.
The Stone
Agate Around Quartz
Blue-grey and white agate surround the retained quartz druzy pocket. Translucent passages, dark bands and bright crystal surfaces create a layered mineral character. We value the way the pale cavity seems to gather light while the darker shell holds its shape in shadow.
Pale, slightly warm crystal surfaces line the depth of the opening. Around them, dark blue-grey bands and lighter passages follow the curve of the skull rather than the irregular outline of the cavity.
The Rough Interior
The close photographs show larger facets within the recess and a finer pale lining near its edge. Those changes give the hollow actual depth, while the polished underside reveals the quieter bands carrying the rest of the skull.
