Sculpture & Aesthetic

A Heart with Fangs

A cobra and a crystal heart are an irresistible pairing to us. One offers an unmistakable warning; the other is a shape we associate with affection. In The Sacred Venom, they belong together: the serpent rises close behind the amethyst, its dark hood giving the bright heart a guardian with a presence of its own.

We like the tension without needing to settle it. Is the cobra protecting something precious, or is the heart what makes this dangerous creature worth approaching? The sculpture leaves both possibilities alive. Its appeal lies in that closeness—beauty with a boundary, tenderness accompanied by teeth.

The Guardian Stays

The raised head gives the whole work its alertness. Below it, the body curves around the crystal, gathering the composition into a compact, watchful form. We are drawn to a creature that can command attention without an exaggerated attack: the lifted hood and steady posture already say enough.

The amethyst keeps the encounter from becoming only a study of the snake. Its heart-shaped face holds the foreground, bright and uneven beside the cobra’s smooth curves. Together they have the intimacy of an object kept close and the theatrical presence to anchor a cabinet of curiosities.

The Making of This Piece

Building Around the Heart

The composition brings a broad crystal face together with a tall, narrow creature. The heart supplies the width; the cobra’s raised hood extends the silhouette above it. Coils gather beneath and beside the crystal, connecting those different proportions into one balanced outline.

That relationship is especially satisfying in a stone sculpture. The crystalline face remains visibly distinct from the polished carving, while the serpent gives its irregular edge a flowing companion. We enjoy how little the composition needs beyond those two forms: a heart, a guardian, and enough space for each to remain unmistakable.

A Serpent in the Round

The carving continues through the coiled body behind the crystal. Broad curves fold into tighter turns, and the scale pattern travels across those changes in direction. The cobra has a body with volume and movement, carrying the sculpture beyond its frontal silhouette.

The face and hood provide the concentration; the coils provide the rhythm. Polishing gathers light across the dark agate, allowing the individual scales and the larger sweep of the body to remain readable together. The result rewards a close look while keeping the creature’s posture clear.

The Stone

Two Ways of Holding Light

The agate carries deep blue-grey and violet tones, interrupted by lighter lines that continue through the serpent’s carved surfaces. Beside it, the amethyst forms a field of closely gathered purple crystal points, bordered by a paler band. Their meeting gives this work much of its character before symbolism enters the picture.

We love the different ways these surfaces hold light. A reflection can travel broadly over the polished hood and coils, while the crystal face breaks it into scattered flashes. The two photographs below bring those surfaces close together: the scale carving and the crystalline edge remain distinct parts of one composition.

The distribution of colour, the crystal points and the stone’s individual markings belong to this particular sculpture. They give The Sacred Venom its own balance of dark lustre and violet brightness.
