The Material
This specimen retains the layered structure of a natural agate geode. Translucent dark agate and chalcedony form the outer body, while the open cavity contains a dense lining of fine white quartz crystals. The polished banded exterior contrasts with the irregular reflective surface of the druzy interior. Differences in crystal size, orientation, banding, and translucency belong to the original formation and remain visible throughout the sculpture.
The Sculpture
The serpent coils across the upper surface of the geode, following the curve of the natural opening. Repeated scale engravings define its body, while the raised head and polished eyes establish the direction of its gaze. On the opposite ridge, a small mouse turns back toward the serpent, with carved fur, rounded ears, and a compact posture distinguishing it from the smoother reptilian form. The sculpture is worked for viewing from multiple angles, but the direct visual relationship between the two animals defines its principal view.
Form & Meaning
A serpent and mouse occupy a familiar relationship in nature, but this scene pauses before pursuit or escape. The mouse turns toward the predator rather than disappearing from view, while the serpent remains coiled above the open crystal chamber. The title “The Silent Stare” refers to this unresolved interval. It can be read as an image of awareness under pressure, although the sculpture does not prescribe whether the next movement will be confrontation, evasion, or restraint.
