The Moment Before
The Silent Stare holds the instant before either creature moves. A serpent and a small mouse share the edge of a crystal hollow, each presence sharpening the other. We are drawn to that suspended attention, when a whole encounter seems to exist inside a single breath.
The Vision Behind‘The Silent Stare’
We imagined the hush before the chase. A serpent gathers its strength along the crystal rim, its gaze fixed on the small mouse ahead. The mouse turns back, whiskers lifted, paws ready to carry it away. Between them lies a brief, charged distance. We wanted to hold that instant in stone: the hunter’s patience, the prey’s alertness, and the wild uncertainty of what comes next.
A Small, Dangerous World
There is no need to complete the scene. The mouse holds its little head high, its tiny paws giving it a touching vulnerability, while the serpent stays low and composed against the stone. We love the tension in the space between them. Neither has made a move, and the next moment belongs entirely to the viewer’s imagination.
The Making of This Piece
A Landscape in One Geode
The natural hollow supplies the space between the figures. Carved agate along its rim becomes both creatures and the ground they occupy. That arrangement lets the stone act as a landscape rather than merely a support beneath an animal carving.
Holding the Encounter Still
The long sweep of the serpent and the small, compact mouse give the composition very different scales of attention. The broad crystal bed keeps space between them. Their relationship remains readable because the carving leaves that interval open.
The serpent follows the rim around the pale hollow, making the boundary of the geode part of its body language. The mouse occupies a smaller upper passage, clearly separate while still belonging to the same mineral landscape.
The Stone
Agate and White Quartz
Dark polished agate gives the serpent its striking outline, while warmer, lighter passages help the little mouse stand apart. Between them, fine white quartz crystals fill the hollow with a delicate, restless sparkle.
We love how the stone’s natural colors help tell the story. The contrast does more than reveal the carving—it gives each creature its own presence within this tiny, untamed world.
When Light Enters the Agate
There is a lovely surprise in the darker agate. When light passes through the thinner carved areas, warm amber tones emerge from within the stone, revealing a richness that is easy to miss at first glance. We especially enjoy how this hidden warmth appears in both the serpent and the little mouse, giving their quiet encounter another layer of beauty.
