The Material
Nine Dragon Jasper is a commercial name used for a dense ornamental stone distinguished by its dark, mottled appearance and suitability for detailed carving. This specimen presents a predominantly dark mineral field with subtle variations that become more visible across its polished ridges and recessed surfaces. Its substantial mass supports the sculpture’s vertical scale, while the smooth finish allows reflected light to define details that might otherwise recede into the dark material.
The Sculpture
The sculpture is carved as a single composition of two crossed axes held by armored hands. Individual fingers wrap around the handles, while layered plates, rivets, joints, and raised borders define the gauntlets. The axe heads extend outward in balanced opposition, each incorporating engraved zoomorphic motifs and repeated ornamental lines. Deep recesses separate the hands, handles, and blades without visually fragmenting the stone. The crossed structure creates a strong central axis, while the broad lower section provides the physical base required for the sculpture’s height and weight.
Form & Meaning
Crossed weapons have long appeared in military insignia, heraldry, monuments, and commemorative art as signs of readiness, conflict, allegiance, or resolved action. Here, the axes are not shown in motion. They are held in a fixed, symmetrical arrangement by armored hands, shifting the emphasis from combat to restraint and commitment. The title “Warlord’s Vow” frames the composition as a pledge made before action: strength held under discipline rather than force released without direction.
