The Material
Serpentine describes a mineral group and serpentine-rich materials rather than one mineral with fixed properties. Blocks may contain antigorite, lizardite, chrysotile, and associated minerals, producing variable color, translucency, hardness, and a waxy polish; it should not be confused with Nephrite or Jadeite.
The Sculpture
Each skull is carved from a selected block of natural stone and progressively shaped to define the brow ridge, orbital cavities, nasal opening, cheekbones, teeth, and jawline. Successive stages of grinding and polishing refine the surface while preserving the clarity of the anatomical structure.
Because the carving process responds to the characteristics of the individual material, minor variations in proportion and surface detail may occur.
Form & Meaning
The human skull is one of the most enduring forms in art. Stripped of expression and identity, it reduces the human figure to its underlying structure.
Across different artistic traditions, the skull has been used to reflect on mortality, time, equality, and the material nature of human life. In contemporary stone carving, it creates a direct contrast between a universally recognizable anatomical form and the individual character of natural stone.
