The Material

Black Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass rather than a crystalline mineral. It forms when silica-rich molten rock cools too rapidly for an orderly crystal structure to develop. The material is typically black to brownish black and can take a strong glass-like polish. Subtle variations in color, inclusions, flow structure, and surface reflection may occur naturally between pieces.

The Craft

Each skull is carved from a selected block of natural stone and progressively shaped to define the brow ridge, orbital cavities, nasal opening, cheekbones, teeth, and jawline. Successive stages of grinding and polishing refine the surface while preserving the clarity of the anatomical structure.

Because the carving process responds to the characteristics of the individual material, minor variations in proportion and surface detail may occur.

Form & Meaning

The skull has long been used in art as a symbol of mortality, time, transformation, and the underlying structure of life.

The lizard introduces a different visual language — one associated with adaptability, instinct, movement, and survival.

Bringing the two forms together creates a tension between stillness and movement: the enduring structure of the skull beneath a living creature frozen in motion.

Natural Variation Statement & Care

The photographs show representative examples from this design. The piece you receive will follow the stated size range and carving standard; color, banding, inclusions, weight, and minor proportions may vary naturally. Pattern placement cannot be selected unless the listing states otherwise.

The stated size represents the standard size category for this design. As each piece is individually carved from natural stone, exact dimensions and weight may vary slightly between pieces.

Photographs and videos are intended to represent the piece as accurately as possible. Due to lighting conditions and photographic equipment, slight differences in color and tone may occur.

Care: Black Obsidian can take a smooth, reflective polish but is more vulnerable to chipping than many quartz-based stones. Protect it from drops, hard impacts, and contact with harder materials, particularly around the teeth, jaw, and other defined edges. Remove dust with a clean, soft cloth. If additional cleaning is necessary, use a slightly damp cloth and dry the sculpture promptly. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
