The Material
Mookaite is an Australian ornamental stone associated with the Windalia Radiolarite formation of Western Australia and named after the Mooka Creek area. It developed from silica-rich sediment containing the microscopic remains of ancient marine organisms, later consolidated and silicified over geological time. This specimen displays the material’s characteristic range of earthy colors, including yellow, red, purple, and cream. Its broad color fields are interrupted by pale veins, irregular boundaries, and fine dendritic markings that continue across the carved surfaces.
The Sculpture
The skull follows a clean anatomical silhouette with a rounded cranium, balanced cheekbones, recessed eye sockets, and a defined jaw. Ornamentation has been kept to a minimum, leaving the stone’s color distribution visible across the entire form. Yellow and cream areas frame portions of the face, while deeper red and purple bands extend across the polished crown. The continuous high-gloss finish strengthens the contrast between adjacent colors and allows the natural pattern to remain legible from multiple angles.
Form & Meaning
The skull compresses the human form into a durable mineral material shaped by an ancient geological process. Mookaite’s varied bands and fossil-derived origins introduce a visible record of environmental change, while the skull has long served in art as a reminder of mortality and passing time. In this piece, those two time scales meet: an individual human symbol is rendered in stone formed through processes far older than human history.
