The Material
This specimen retains both the outer rock matrix of an amethyst geode and an exposed cavity lined with natural druzy quartz crystals. The purple crystal points vary in size, orientation, and color intensity across the interior. Against them, the coarse earth-toned matrix preserves the geode’s original geological character. The contrast between the unpolished cavity and the worked exterior is central to the piece.
The Sculpture
The skull is carved around the open geode rather than separated from it. Its facial structure occupies the solid portion of the stone, while the crystal-lined cavity remains exposed along one side. A serpent coils across the crown, with its curved body following the upper contour of the cranium. Fine surface detailing distinguishes the serpent from both the smoother carved skull and the irregular mineral interior. Together, these three surfaces—polished form, textured carving, and raw crystal—define the sculpture.
Form & Meaning
The serpent has appeared across many artistic traditions as an emblem of renewal, transformation, and continuity, drawing on its ability to shed its skin. Here, its coiled form sits above a skull opened to reveal an intact crystal interior. The composition brings two familiar symbols of change into one structure: the skull as a reminder of mortality and the serpent as an image of recurring life. The exposed geode adds a physical contrast between the reserved outer matrix and the crystalline structure held within.
