The Material
Black obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly with insufficient time for a visible crystal structure to develop. Its compact, noncrystalline composition can accept a smooth, highly reflective polish. This specimen presents a deep black appearance across the principal surfaces, with reflected light defining the contours of the carving more clearly than variations in color or pattern.
The Sculpture
The skull is built around a balanced frontal structure, with recessed eye sockets, defined cheekbones, a compact jaw, and two pronounced horns rising from the cranium. Their tapered profiles extend the form without separating it from the solid mass of the skull. The polished finish continues across the face, crown, and horns, allowing highlights to trace the sculpture’s geometry. Because obsidian can chip along thin edges, the horn tips and recessed facial details require careful handling.
Form & Meaning
The title “The Black Aegis” refers to the aegis as an image of formidable authority and defense in classical mythology, rather than a claim that the object provides protection. Horns have likewise been used in art to suggest strength, rank, danger, or a boundary that should not be crossed. Combined with the skull, they produce a compact emblem of physical presence and mortality, expressed through symmetry, dark reflection, and an uncompromising silhouette.
