The Material
This specimen combines a solid amethyst-bearing matrix with an exposed cluster of natural quartz crystal points. The carved portion displays a dark violet tone and a polished surface, while the reverse retains the irregular geometry and varied luster of the crystal formation. Differences in crystal size, orientation, and color concentration belong to the original specimen and remain visible throughout the cluster.
The Sculpture
The skull occupies the solid front of the material, with the natural crystal cluster preserved across the reverse. Its facial structure is finished to a reflective polish, creating a controlled contrast with the unworked crystal points behind it. The headdress is arranged as a sequence of elongated feathers, each defined by a central line and repeated carved ridges. Their tapered ends extend around the crown and sides of the skull, giving the compact sculpture a taller and more elaborate profile.
Form & Meaning
Feathered Warbonnet carry distinct meanings within the cultures from which they originate and should not be reduced to a single universal symbol. In this contemporary sculptural interpretation, the headdress functions primarily as ceremonial regalia, enlarging the skull’s silhouette and establishing a sense of rank and presence. The exposed amethyst cluster forms a contrasting reverse: ordered carving at the front gives way to an irregular mineral structure behind it.
