The Material
Amethyst is the violet variety of crystalline quartz. This specimen presents pale-to-deeper purple color with natural internal fractures that reflect and scatter light beneath the polished surface. At the temple, a dense, dark-toned matrix formation sits within the surrounding quartz, producing a rounded, circular pattern. A narrow geode seam across the reverse exposes an irregular crystalline surface. These contrasting inclusions, fractures, and mineral boundaries belong to the original specimen.
The Sculpture
The solid amethyst body is carved into a human skull with a rounded cranium, recessed eye sockets, a defined nasal opening, shaped cheekbones, and individually separated teeth. Its polished surface allows the internal fracture network and color transitions to remain visible throughout the form. The dark circular marking occupies the temporal area without being concealed by additional ornamentation. Across the rear, the raw geode seam interrupts the cranial surface, providing an exposed view of the specimen’s internal structure.
Form & Meaning
The title “The Cosmic Eye” refers to the natural circular formation at the temple and its resemblance to an eye. Eye motifs have been used across many artistic traditions to suggest observation, attention, or a focal point. Here, the visual interpretation begins with an accidental geological pattern positioned within a deliberate anatomical carving.
