The Material
This specimen presents a natural association of apophyllite and stilbite on a dark volcanic matrix. Clear to translucent apophyllite forms prismatic crystals with a bright, glass-like luster. Peach-colored stilbite, a member of the zeolite mineral group, occurs beside it in radiating, sheaf-like formations. Differences in transparency, color, crystal habit, and surface reflection distinguish the two minerals around the cavity. Their delicate projecting points remain attached to the heavier, darker matrix that provides the structure of the piece.
The Sculpture
Both principal faces contain a human skull beneath a coiled serpent. Each skull is recessed within the mineral-lined cavity, with the serpent following the upper curve of the cranium and the surrounding matrix forming a natural arch. Carving on both sides gives the specimen no conventional front or back; turning it reveals a second interpretation of the same arrangement. The worked figures remain visually enclosed by the irregular apophyllite and stilbite formations, preserving the crystals as the outer frame of the composition.
Form & Meaning
Janus was the Roman god associated with beginnings, transitions, doorways, and passages. He was traditionally represented with two faces, looking in opposing directions and later interpreted as attending to both past and future. This sculpture adapts that dual structure through two skull-and-serpent compositions carved on opposite sides of one specimen. The serpent’s coiled form adds a recurring image of change through its natural shedding cycle, while the mineral cavity functions as the portal named in the title.
