The Material
This specimen combines a violet amethyst cluster with a dense grey-blue agate body. Amethyst is the purple variety of crystalline quartz, while agate consists principally of compact microcrystalline quartz deposited in successive layers. The front presents a closely spaced bed of natural crystal points within a heart-shaped outline. Behind it, semi-translucent agate provides the solid material from which the cobra is carved. Differences in color, translucency, crystal scale, and surface texture clearly separate the two portions.
The Sculpture
The cobra rises behind the amethyst cluster with its head elevated and hood expanded. Repeated scale engravings follow the polished body as it coils into the lower base, while carved markings across the reverse define the broad dorsal surface of the hood. The sculpture is worked for viewing from multiple angles: the amethyst heart dominates the front, and the cobra’s body, hood pattern, and coiled structure become more visible from the sides and rear. Both forms remain integrated within the same mineral specimen.
Form & Meaning
A cobra’s expanded hood is a visible warning display, making the animal a longstanding image of danger, authority, and vigilance in several cultural traditions. The heart shape, by contrast, is widely used in modern visual culture to represent affection and emotional attachment. Placing the cobra behind the crystal heart creates a tension between vulnerability and threat. The title “The Sacred Venom” refers to that opposition without claiming that the sculpture or its materials provide protection.
