The Material
Serpentine refers to a group of hydrous magnesium silicate minerals commonly found together in ornamental stone. Its appearance ranges across yellow-green, olive, and deeper green tones, often with a waxy or silky luster after polishing. This specimen displays a translucent olive-green body with natural tonal variation across the birds and branch. Serpentine is softer than quartz and accepts detailed carving, but projecting elements and finely worked edges remain vulnerable to scratches and impact.
The Sculpture
The composition is carved for viewing from multiple angles. One eagle faces forward, with individual talons wrapped around the branch and layered feathers defining its breast and wings. Its companion turns inward, bringing the carved feather groups across its back into view. Beneath them, the branch bends through the full height of the sculpture, with grooves, knots, and flowing grain lines imitating weathered wood. A custom wooden base supports the narrow vertical form and provides additional stability.
Form & Meaning
Eagles have appeared in heraldry, civic emblems, and artistic traditions as images of authority, vigilance, height, and expansive sight. Presenting two eagles within the same tree shifts the composition away from solitary command. Their opposing orientations create a shared field of observation, with each bird attending to a different direction. The title “Twin Sovereigns” frames the pair as independent figures held within one structure, suggesting alliance without requiring uniformity.
